Listed below are some of the classic local hiking challenges. Most of these hikes are along the Long Trail(路径), the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States: initiated in 1910.

SUNSET LEDGE 2, 924’2. 2 MILES

Perfect for kids. Popular! Park at the lop of Lincoln Gap and head south on the Long Trail. Views over Addison County to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack range. About an hour round trip, plus the time you spend enjoying the view.

GENERAL STARK 3, 662’3. 2 MILES

A local’s favourite with fantastic views. Start from the App Gap and head south on the Long Trail up steep Stark’s Wall all and follow the Long Trail to the Stark’s Nest Shelter at the top of the Single Chair. Or start from the Mad River Glen ski area and hike the service roads up to the same spot. About 3 hours round trip.

CAMEL’S HUMP 4, 080’7. 4 MILES

This most challenging 7.4 miles round-trip hike takes you above the trees to Vermont’s highest undeveloped peak. Spectacular views and an unparalleled feeling of accomplishment. Budget 5 hours. About a 40 minutes drive from the Mad River Valley to railhead either in Duxbury or in Huntington.

MT. ABRAHAM 4, 000′ 5.2 MILES

This is a 4-hour hike if you are a normal human being and the views are spectacular. Mt. Abr is one of Vermont’s 5 peaks over 4,000′, with 360° panoramic views. Part of the Monroe Skyline Park at Lincoln Gap and head north on the Long Trail. If you hike in the summer, hike down Upper Jester and ride the Super Bravo chair to Sugarbush base area.

TO ENSURE A GREAT HIKE

These hikes are challenging: do not underestimate the journey. Be prepared. Always bring a good, printed trail map; Map Adventures is the best (at The Tempest Bookshop or local gear shops). Trail markers are not always visible and estimated hiking time is based on fit individuals. Always wear hiking shoes, carry a backpack with more water than you think you will need, some calorie-rich foods, and a flashlight; bring an extra layer for warmth or rain. Sunscreen might be a good idea depending on the season.

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometre swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove, off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and speedos!

Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystem with their large diversity of marine life. When asked why he doesn’t wear a wetsuit, Pugh says, “I ask world leaders to do everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I’m asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message.”

It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometre swim in Antarctica where the water averaged about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.

Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.

This is not the first time that Pugh has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometre in the North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.

( ) 4. Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuit?

A. To swim faster. B. To show his bravery.

C. To build up his body. D. To win public attention.

( ) 5. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. Pugh’s body. B. The water.

C. Pugh’s body temperature. D. The water temperature.

( ) 6. What’s Pugh’s advice about swimming in freezing waters?

A. One must be fully prepared. B. One should be expert at swimming.

C. One should be ready to take on challenges. D. One must be used to long-distance swimming.

( ) 7. What may be the best title for the text?

A. Lewis Pugh: Swimming for a Cause B. How to Survive a Swim in Cold Waters

C. How to Prepare for Extreme Swimming D. Lewis Pugh: Achieving the Impossible

Attending college can be expensive, and applying to college can be costly as well. With today’s college application fees averaging around $80, you can expect to spend hundreds of dollars on college before you are even accepted into a school.

One of the easiest ways to save money on college application fees before you begin applying is to narrow down your list of schools. To save money, try to limit the schools to which you apply to about 23 reach schools and 23 safety schools.

At some schools, being a relative of a graduate can secure you a free application. If you are applying to a school where one of your parents or grandparents is a former graduate, check to see if you’re qualified for it.

Research the preferred method of applying for each school on your list. Some schools offer free online applications, yet charge a fee for paper submissions. This is because online applications save schools the cost of employing a staff member to physically enter the application information.

Several states, such as Michigan and North Carolina, take part in College Application Week, where many schools in the participating states cancel their application fee for the week. Be sure to contact the schools to which you are applying to see if they participate in College Application Week and when the programme takes place in that state.

Apply for early admission. If you have already decided on which college is your top choice, consider applying under an Early Action or Early Decision admission programme. If you are accepted, you won’t have to submit application fees to other schools.

For more information regarding college applications and the fees associated with them, contact your high school advisor or the admissions department at your school(s) of interest.

A. receive fees faster than before B. employ someone else to work

C. cut down the cost of employment D. enter the application information

( ) 11. It can be known from the passage that ________.

A. application fee might be cancelled conditionally

B. no state attends College Application Week

A typical child plays many roles, such as friend, neighbour, son or daughter. Simply reminding children of that fact can lead to better problem-solving and more flexible thinking, according to new research from Duke University.

Better problem-solving was just one positive finding of the study, said lead author Sarah Gaither, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. After thinking about their own various identities, children also showed more flexible thinking about race and other social groupingsa behaviour that could be valuable in an increasingly diverse society.

In a series of experiments, Gaither and her colleagues looked at 196 children, ages 6 and 7. In an experiment, one group of children was reminded that they had various identities, such as son, daughter, reader or helper. A second group of children was reminded of their multiple physical attributes, such as a mouth, arms and legs. All the children then needed to handle a few tasks.

Children who were reminded of their various identities showed stronger problem-solving and creative thinking skills. When shown pictures of a bear staring at honey-filled beehive(蜂窝) high up in a tree, these children had more creative ideas for how the bear might get the honey, such as turning over a bowl so that it became a stool(凳子). In other words, they saw a new use for the bowl. Children who were reminded of their multiple roles also showed more flexible thinking about social groupings. When asked to categorize different photos of faces, they suggested many ways to do so. They identified smiling faces such as unsmiling ones, and old and young faces. The other children, meanwhile, primarily grouped people’s faces by race and gender(性别).

“The study suggests simple ways to promote flexible thinking for the young, which could be especially valuable for teachers,” Gaither said.

“We have this tendency in our society to only think about ourselves in connection with one important group at a time,” Gaither said. “When kids think that they have various identities, they show greater abilities.”

( ) 12. What are all the kids asked to do in the experiments?

A. Play different kinds of roles. B. Remind others of their roles.

C. Approach several tasks. D. Classify a group of tasks.

( ) 13. How does-the author mainly clarify the conclusions of the study in Paragraph 4?

A. By giving examples. B. By using experts’ words.

C. By listing a few figures. D. By showing cause and effect.

( ) 14. What can we learn from Sarah Gaither’s words?

A. Improving the kids’ flexible thinking ability is important teaching.

B. Kids tend to behave selflessly after thinking about their roles.

C. Kids’ creative thinking ability is easy to discover and develop.

D. Teachers are supposed to make the most of the kids’ flexibility.

( ) 15. What is the best title for the text?

A. Kids’ Social Abilities Are Consistent with Their Education

B. Considering Their Various Roles Improves Kids’ Abilities

C. Kids Have a Variety of Identities in Their Daily Life

D. Problem-solving Ability Is Necessary for Most Kids

第二节(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I received an urgent call from my aunt. “Turn on the TV. Granny is on the Channel 10 news.” It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver’s side window, intending to carjack(劫车) her.

Now, what the would-be carjacker couldn’t have known was that this woman simply wasn’t “a granny”. This was Nancy Johnson—the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel. She was the proud owner of the new minivan(小型货车) she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.

The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, “Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you.” A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge. “If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would’ve pulled it out and led with that first,” she shouted at him, apparently unworried.

She was right. The criminal didn’t have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny’s arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn(喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右;

2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

读后续写

After a well-placed kick, the man was done, and attempted to release her and run. But Granny wouldn’t stand for that. It was now her turn to grab onto him, her hands made strong from hours and hours of farm work. That poor fool didn’t have a chance. She shouted for help to bystanders, and they rushed to her aid. With Granny leading the charge, a group of strangers came together and pinned the man to the sidewalk, holding him there until the police came. A silver-haired woman had just made a citizen’s arrest.

Later, we asked, “Granny, don’t you realize you could have got yourself killed?” Granny’s answer was surprisingly amusing and simple: “I wasn’t scared of that little idiot. I’d had my brand-new van for less than two days and a pack of good sandwiches for my office. And there was no way he was going to get either of those!” But we all learnt an important lesson from her that day—the same lesson that had been building through the years. She encouraged us to push boundaries and expectations. But even more so, she taught us fearlessness.

Dear Lisa,

It is nice to know you are learning how to do embroidery in Suzhou, for I am also a big fan of this traditional Chinese handicraft. I wonder how you are getting along with your courses.

My mother is credited with arousing my interest in Chinese silk embroidery. Under her guidance, I have just finished one piece of needlework and I’d like to share it with you. If convenient, we can continue learning from each other by sharing our works. and communicating regularly.

Hope you can make more progress.

Yours,

第二节One possible version:

Paragraph 1:

After a well-placed kick, the man was done, and attempted to release her and run. But Granny wouldn’t stand for that. It was now her turn to grab onto him, her hands made strong from hours and hours of farm work. That poor fool didn’t have a chance. She shouted for help to bystanders, and they rushed to her aid. With Granny leading the charge, a group of strangers came together and pinned the man to the sidewalk, holding him there until the police came. A silver-haired woman had just made a citizen’s arrest.

Paragraph 2:

Later, we asked, “Granny, don’t you realize you could have got yourself killed?” Granny’s answer was surprisingly amusing and simple: “I wasn’t scared of that little idiot. I’d had my brand-new van for less than two days and a pack of good sandwiches for my office. And there was no way he was going to get either of those!” But we all learnt an important lesson from her that day—the same lesson that had been building through the years. She encouraged us to push boundaries and expectations. But even more so, she taught us fearlessness.

听力原文

Text 1

W: Welcome, James. Let me get you a drink—can I get you some coffee or water?

M: I just quit drinking coffee. Do you have anything sweet, though?

W: Of course. I was going to make myself some coffee, but I’ll grab Cokes for both of us, instead. (1)

Text 2

M: I’m struggling with my study these days. I usually look at images and I can remember them, but I’m not taking anything in.

W: I absorb information best by listening to it, (2) so I record myself reading my notes and then listen to it at night.

Text3

W: Thanks for driving me to my house, Steve. How’s Diane doing?

M: She’s just staying home with the kids until they go to pre-school. Have you talked to Mom? (3)

W: Yeah, I heard she’s become a bit ill. I’m going to check up on her later.

Text 4

M: This is the last time I’m coming to this restaurant.

W: It is said that their steaks are some of the best in town. What happened?

M: They’re excellent but always over-cooked. And I can’t get any waiter’s attention around here, either. (4)

W: It’s alright. Let’s enjoy it, anyway.

Text5

W: Haven’t you moved out? I thought you moved last month.

M: Cathy and I intended to move, but she wasn’t satisfied with any of the flats she looked at. But she just found a new apartment on the Internet the other day and we want to move this weekend. (5)

Text6

M: Hey, Lily. How was your summer vacation?

W: Fantastic. I just came back to the US. Where have you been?

M: You left the country? I just went up to Lake Tahoe, as usual.

W: Awesome—what did you do there? I forgot to tell you I went to visit my grandparents in Beijing. It was so cool.

M: I just visited a friend’s lake house. (6) That’s amazing—what’s Beijing like?

W: It’s super modern and traditional at the same time. But you know me —I’m more into natural places and landscapes.

M: You escaped the urban scenes, then?

W: Yeah, we saw an amazing mountain region in the northwest of Beijing, called Yanqing. ()

Text 7

W: I know this jacket is really popular, but surely $100 is too much. (10)

M: It’s of the absolute highest quality, miss. I guarantee that it’ll keep you warm all winter.

W: Actually, its just for a photo shoot(拍摄). I only need it for one day and then wont need it anymore. (8)

M: You’re a photographer? You must make a lot of money. Of course, you can afford it.

W: No, actually I’m an amateur model, and I’m on a tight budget. Besides, I don’t even think this is a real Moncler jacket.

M: It isn’t authentic, but it is of identical quality. At a mall, it will cost you ten times this price, and in this market, you won’t find it for less than $100. (9) (10)

W: If you can offer me a $10 discount, I’ll buy it now. (10)

M: Deal. (10)

Text 8

W: I’ve had this laptop for five years. There are so many valuable things saved on it. (12)

M: Did you back them up? It’s a good idea to back up your photos and videos.

W: I never thought I needed to. How did the computer break down?

M: It’s hard to say. Was it dropped or exposed to water?

W: Actually, I left it outside on my balcony by accident.

M: I see. It must have been rained on.

W: It wasn’t that. But it was in direct sunlight for hours. (11)

M: In this summer heat? It must have fried the internal components and processors. (11)

W: I didn’t know that was possible. Can I save the photos, at least? (12)

M: I’m afraid not. We can replace it with a new laptop model, though.

W: I also need the memory saved on this laptop for work. (12) Is it really damaged beyond repair?

M: I’m afraid so, but there are useful parts we can recycle for money. (13) If so, we can give you a discount on a new computer.

W: OK, I guess I’ll do that. (13)

Text 9 (16题为推断题)

W: Excuse me. Can you help me? I am looking for the Lost and Found Office. Could you please tell me where it is?

M: Sure. Can you see the lab building, the four-story grey one over there? Do you see the office behind it? It is beside a small store. I guess you are new here, right?

W: Yeah. I came to New York as an exchange student three days ago. Unluckily, I lost my ID card at school. Actually, I’m French, but I grew up in England. (14) You’re an American, I suppose.

M: Yes. By the way, my name is John Smith.

W: I am Alice Green. Pleased to meet you. So, what’s your major?

M: I’m studying medicine now. What’s yours?

W: I’m not sure yet. I’m kind of interested in acting, but my parents think I should do business. (15)

M: I see. So do you live in the dorm?

W: No. I rent a one-bedroom apartment about five blocks from here. Well, I have to go. Thanks for your help. Maybe we’ll run into each other again sometime.

M: Maybe. It’s a pretty small college. See you later.

Text 10

Hi, my dear fellow workers. I’ve lived in China for two years, (20) but most of you know that I’m from Portugal. Today is a holiday known as Carnival, which is an incredible celebration in my country. This holiday is most famous for its all-night parties, festive dances, and parades in Brazil, and this is partly because Portugal and Brazil share cultural similarities. In the past, Portugal occupied the land of Brazil and sent over millions of people. Today, Portuguese is the national language of Brazil, but that’s not the only country that shares our language. Five countries in Africa natively speak Portuguese, as well. (17) Being one of the oldest countries in Europe, our cities feel like you’re walking into a time machine. You can see beautiful ancient architecture in our capital, Lisbon, and you can even find the oldest bookstore in the world. You can also hear a traditional Portuguese music genre called Fado. I think it is one of the most amazing things about my country and its performance is really worth watching. (18) North of the cities, you will find yourself in rolling hills and forest. This is, what I’d consider, the best travel destination in all of Europe. (19) I love my life here in Shenzhen, but I do miss my home sometimes. It’ll be around five years before I move home, (20) but let’s celebrate Carnival in Shenzhen today. I can’t wait to cook you some Portuguese food and teach you about my culture.
